Flu Vaccine. Do be sure you have the Free Flu Jab as soon as possible. As an OPAF member, flu can be more severe if any of the following apply to you:
- Age 65 and over
- An underlying health condition (such as long-term heart or respiratory disease)
- Weakened immune system from any cause.
Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it is highly recommended that they have a flu vaccination every year to protect themselves.
Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against these unpredictable conditions.
Elderly Care. We in OPAF are concerned about the information available to older members of the community on how the provision of residential care is paid for and managed for us. It would be useful to hear of your or your friends’ recent experiences. A little bit of myth busting would not go amiss!

Out and About. It is very important to keep active and sociable and the best way through the dark days and evenings of winter is to get out and about. Arrange to meet in the town centre, the local branch of the library (with coffee shop) Men’s Matters and others meeting groups. Even a nice warm local pub!
Being isolated is really bad for you - but being a member of OPAF is a good sign – and helping others to be sociable is a way of helping yourself.
One of the best ways of keeping in good health is to make sure you have plenty to do…

The National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team is focussing on dementia sufferers who may be receiving scams or nuisance calls and offering a solution.

Cars left INSECURE, act as a Crime Attractor’, bringing ‘Opportunist Thieves’ to your area, looking for easy pickings in a community that is not sufficiently security aware !

10/11 Friday 5.15 p.m. The Avenue, Datchet. DISTRACTION. The owner answered the door to a man who asked for a glass of water for a friend who had just been dropped off and their car had broken down. He was invited inside, while the owner went to fetch the water. Later they discovered that cash had been stolen. The advice I have given for years now - NO-ONE COMES INTO YOUR HOME UNLESS YOU KNOW THEM, OR THEY HAVE MADE AN APPOINTMENT. If anyone else knocks on your door and asks for anything, a glass of water, to use the phone, to check for anything, the correct response is…………………..WAIT THERE, I WILL GET YOU WHAT YOU NEED. You then go inside securing the door behind you to do whatever is needed. YOU DO NOT INVITE THEM IN, OR LEAVE THE DOOR ON THE LATCH, WHILE YOU DO THE NECESSARY.

10/11 - 11/11 Friday 6 p.m. / Saturday 8 a.m. Stanmore Close. CAR ENTERED BY UNKNOWN MEANS Car searched, but nothing stolen. The car has a keyless entry system. As I have pointed out, if you have a traditional key fob, the signal from the fob to the car, cannot be copied. As all fobs work on the same principal - a set of predetermined random numbers recognised by the under bonnet computer, and changed every time the fob is used, copying the signal is useless. Unfortunately all key fobs work on the same radio frequency, which is shared by TV remotes and wireless doorbells etc. Any other key fob / longer ranged up and over garage door fob, used at the same time, will mean that each car, receives a batch of mixed numbers, the computer does not recognise - so does nothing ! Various devices can therefore be used to stop a car from locking. SO - every time a fob activated car is locked, you must try a car door handle to make sure the signal has not been blocked. The signal from keyless fobs, on the other hand can be copied as they emit a persistent signal, matched to the car, so that it opens as you approach and start the car. There are various devices out there, used to copy keyless car signals. Keyless fobs must be kept in a small faraday cage to prevent the signal being copied. The small metal credit card wallets are perfect for this !
10/11 - 11/11 Friday 6 p.m. / Saturday 8 a.m. Kennel Avenue. Garage Break. A fence to the front of the property has been cut to gain entry, and entered the garage which had been left INSECURE. Silverware, a Bosche drill, red wine and 6 bottles of Bollinger Champagne stolen.
10/11 - 11/11 Friday 6 p.m. / Saturday 10 a.m. Highgrove Avenue. CAR ENTERED BY UNKNOWN MEANS - Glove compartment opened and searched, mars bars placed upon the seat - nothing stolen.

Back in January, I contacted you regarding letter box thieves on Lady Margaret Road, Sunningdale.
Well it seems they’re back around again.
Last night at 7.50 p.m., a young English guy calling himself Michael rang the door bell. He was wearing a green high vis vest and said he was collecting for Alzheimer’s, I told him we weren’t interested as it was dark and too late !
This morning, myself & my partner both noticed our mobile phones weren’t working - no service - which we found strange. In the mean time, I went to the post box & found 2 new SIM cards in the mail, which the service provider said we’d requested.
We contacted our service provider & these had apparently been requested on 7th November, by someone with knowledge of our password. Apparently, you need to give 2 digits, which they ask you to provide randomly, if you wish to make any changes to, or request, SIM cards etc.
The person who did this, said both SIM cards had been damaged. It seems highly unlikely that both SIMs would be damaged, but the service provider apparently, accepted their explanation.
On further checking our post box, we found that it had been tampered with from outside and they’d tried to gain access. Obviously trying to get these SIM cards. it now makes me wonder if the person claiming to be ‘Michael’ collecting for Alzheimer’s, was checking to see if anyone was home, so he could attempt to retrieve the SIM cards from the post box.
Anyway, with all that been said Jeff, we’ve had a full day of re-setting passwords, organising new SIM cards etc. etc., which for security reasons all had to be dealt with, at the service provider shop in Windsor.
Tomorrow I’ll speak with the postman, to let him know they’re back out & about again & I know of course you’ll make people aware from your side.

I am really grateful to Margaret, for a timely reminder - particularly in the run up to Christmas, with online ordering and parcel deliveries. Keep an eye on you post - particularly delays and unsolicited post - by which I don’t mean junk mail, but letters from your bank about accounts you were unaware of, or did not request, as well as - as in this case - new SIM cards etc. etc. etc.
NEXT: I have had an email in from Ash - re a suspicious flatbed driving around his area:
White flatbed transit, driving suspiciously around, Rylstone Close, Maidenhead.
A neighbour is having some building work done and this van stopped at the side of their house to have a look at what was going on. The actual builder returned and the van drove off.
The back of the van was full of ladders - I have never seen so many, plus a washer or dryer, and other lumps of metal.
There was a white male driver, black hair, slim. One passenger at least.
Were they driving around, looking for metal ?

Two issues possible here:
- They could be looking for scrap metal
- They could be making a note the date, the address, the type of building work being carried out and if they can get it, the name of the builder from a builders board.
If it is number 2, bogus builders drive around, looking for building works. They note the date and type of work being carried out and the name of the builder from a board or any van parked at the property. Six months later, they turn up and purport to be working for that named builder - which will be familiar to you - and say they have come to check the guarantee.
